I rarely push film, but I recently shot a roll of Ilford HP5 + and for no good reason decided to shoot it at 1600. After removing the finished 24-exposure roll from my Olympus OM -1 and developing it in stock Kodak D-76 for 14 minutesI was pleasantly surprised. Giddy, even. Of course there's grain! But I absolutely love the look.

Pushing HP5 to 1600 was a fun experiment. Rated at 400 ISO, I usually expose Ilford HP5 at 320 to slightly overexpose. That seems to get good results

All images in this post are shot with a Nikon F4 on Ilford HP5+ at ISO 1600 with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 macro and developed in Ilfotec DD-X at 1:4 at 68 degrees for 13 minutes. I was happy with the results from DD-X when used with my current agitation method. For my tastes, the grain is nice and smooth and tones pretty much what I expected.

Ilford HP5+ 400 is my favourite black and white film to shoot. I paired Ilford HP5+ 400 with my Minolta X-700 with Minolta MD 28mm F2.8 Lens. I love shooting the 28mm focal length for street photography. The last time I pushed Ilford HP5+ 400 to 1600 was back in January 2020.
